As a whole, humans are obsessed with their position in society and improving it. Largely influenced by the media, people of lower classes are portrayed in a negative way and are given a bad image. They are labelled; not only by the clothing they wear and how they speak, but even sickness is associated with them. Members of upper classes view them as “Other” and lesser beings then themselves. This makes it hard for a person of lower class to live the American dream and change their social status.
This shows that social class is much more prominent in our everyday lives then it needs to be. Class is usually based on income, except for the uppermost classes where mannerisms become a more important factor. Wealth, however, does not indicate a person’s personality, which is arguably the most important component of an individual. Therefore, we should place less validity on class and its meaning and strive towards less distinction between classes; after all, we're all human.
